British Telecommunications Plc is to develop a centralised intelligence system information for its core network at its new software engineering centre, which it opened in Glasgow yesterday. Telecom is investing UKP5m in the centre, which will concentrate on developing information retrieval systems for company divisions. The new centre, the first of several software units planned by the company, will be a cornerstone of British Telecom’s research and development efforts, which absorbed UKP195m last year. Novell Inc is celebrating a pact due to be announced by British Telecom today under which Telecom will bind its X400 mailroom Message Transfer Agent software to Novell’s own Message Handling System, giving Novell a full seven-layer gateway to the X400 messaging community.
