Look for a burst of video conferences between London and Tokyo later this year: British Telecommunications Plc and Kokusai Denshin Denwa Co, KDD, are to provide the first digital private circuits from the UK to Japan over optical fibres in August. The International KiloStream service will communicate text, data and visuals using TAT-8, the transatlantic optical fibre cable inaugurated in December (CI No 1,081), and the Hawaii-4 and Transpac-3 Pacific optical cables. Digital capacity will be initially be available at transmission rates of 56, 64, 128 and 256Kbps.
