BRITISH TELECOM CONFIRMS ORACLE VIDEO SERVER TRIAL

By CBR Staff Writer

British Telecommunications Plc finally confirmed yesterday that it is looking at Oracle Systems Corp’s multimedia server for use in its UK video on demand trials. We are testing the Oracle multimedia server at our research centre in Martlesham, it told Reuter. The company is planning to use the Oracle equipment in a trial in which it will send video on demand to the homes of 60 of its employees, before moving on to a trial with 2,500 houses if the test with employees is successful. We’ve got no commitment to use Oracle equipment for the 2,500 trial. We’ll go through normal procurement procedures, the company noted, while declining to say whether it was looking at any rival kit. Oracle is scheduled to launch the multimedia server here and in Tokyo today.
