But that doesn’t really stack up because STC Plc has been doing rather well by Northern Telecom and yesterday announced a contract to supply its Supernode telephone exchange to British Telecommunications Plc, which is currently undergoing an extensive expansion programme: the new DMS-300 Supernode exchange will come into service by 1992 and will form part of British Telecom’s international hub, handling up to 15,000 simultaneous calls by the time it is fully-loaded in 1996; STC has also just installed a UKP3m DMS-100 as part of the same expansion programme (CI No 1,367) – out of the UKP50m that British Telecom has set aside for the project, analysts have estimated that around UKP14m will involve London SW-based STC, which also supplied one of the total of seven Northern Telecom exchanges used by British Telecom’s rival, Mercury Communications Ltd.
