The British Railways Board’s British Rail Telecommunications Ltd has signed with Eurotunnel Plc to lease a wayleave to lay telecommunications cables through the Channel Tunnel and has ordered an international trunk exchange from GPT Communication Systems Ltd to link its UK network to that of French national railway operator Societe Nationale des Chemins de Fer in Paris as part of plans to launch an international leased line telecommunications service at the end of next year, the Financial Times reports; it is also applying for a Public Telecommunications Operator’s licence for both UK and international service, in which case it will have to go back to Eurotunnel for a further lease.
