The British Trade Commission denied a Hong Kong press report that London wanted to reduce the number of competitors to Hong Kong Telecommunications Ltd when its exclusive franchise ends in January 1995: the Eastern Express reported that the UK has told China that allowing three new competitors to enter the market would make it too crowded; the three new consortia are led by the local heavyweights Hutchison Whampoa Ltd, Wharf (Holdings) Ltd and New World Development Co Ltd.
