The excited audience showed their excitement on Twitter, with a staggering 16.3 million tweets sent during the big game.
This new record set by the World Cup match crushed Super Bowl’s previous record of 382,000 tweets per minute.
The most buzz was generated (388,985 tweets), when Gonzalo Jara missed in the penalty shootout, which sent Chile back home. But it was Brazilian striker Neymar who grabbed the spotlight, as he was the most frequently mentioned player on the micro blogging site during the match.
Twitter told AFP that more than 300 million messages have been exchanged since the group stages began, and it is already becoming one of the most talked about events on this platform.
Lionel Messi is the most tweeted player, followed by Brazil Neymar.
Brazil seems to be generating the most buzz on Twitter because prior to Saturday the most commented match was Brazil Vs Croatia.
As the FIFA finals approach the Twitter frenzy is only expected to increase.
