JBuilder 9 will also feature integrated tools for building mobile applications in Java 2 Mobile Edition (J2ME), using the Mobile Information Device Profile (MIDP) specification, and introduces a special developer edition of the suite.
Today’s launch comes in the wake of this weeks’ announcement of details of a Borland IDE for Microsoft Corp’s .NET, C Sharp Builder, featuring cross-platform integration with Java and Corba.
Borland is seeking to increase the value proposition of IDEs such as JBuilder through the addition of so-called application lifecycle management features, for application modeling, design, code management and deployment.
Such a move is designed to increase the appeal of Borland’s products among developers and ensure that its offerings become seen as a strategic purchase by chief information officers. Such individuals have greater purchasing power and can help ensure Borland’s products become embedded in customers’ software infrastructure.
Borland is attempting to grow market share while also seeing off number-one tools competitor on Java, IBM Corp.
JBuilder 9 Enterprise Edition tackles application lifecycle management with the inclusion of Borland’s Optimizeit Suite 5.5 to detect memory leaks, ensure code runs efficiently and to monitor the impact of changes. Optimizeit Suite previously shipped separately.
Further enhancing the appeal of JBuilder 9 is the inclusion of tools to build J2ME MIDP applications on devices from Nokia Corp, Siemens AGs, Sprint and Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB. Such tools, previously available for separate download and installation, can now be installed with the suite and activated according to need.
Borland is also expanding JBuilder 9 with introduction of a Developer edition. This low-priced option is targeted at what the company called hard-core programmers building Java ServerPages (JSPs), Servlets and Struts developers. This $1,000 edition does away with most wizards and application lifecycle management features such as modeling and Optimizeit found in JBuilder 9 Enterprise edition that is priced at $3,500.
