IBM itself has had immense trouble sorting out its C compilers for the AS/400, let alone C++, but now Borland International Inc has taken pity on beleagured AS/400 programmers and released a version of its own C++ developers suite for the venerable business minicomputer. C++ Builder/400 Client/Server Suite was unveiled last week at the AS/400 user group conference in San Antonio, Texas. Borland has had an AS/400 version of its Pascal- based Delphi product for some time. The C++ product is based on Borland’s C++/Builder for Windows95 and NT, and is a combination of C++ compiler, object-oriented component library and visual design tools. Borland has licensed the ClientOjects/400 component library from Paris, France-based Traitement Cooperatif & Intigration de Systemes SA, technology it also uses in the AS/400 version of Delphi. The product is available now, priced at $4,000. Proving it’s serious about the AS/400, Borland has also started a Borland Partner/400 developer program, which currently has 40 members in 28 countries, providing, sales, marketing and support for users of its development tools on the platform. IBM’s favored development language for the AS/400 is SmallTalk.
