Commenting on his company;s figures (opposite), Borland International Inc chairman and chief executive Philippe Kahn said the company’s dBase for Windows and the new version of Paradox have been well received by customers. The results were better than Wall Street analysts’ consensus estimate of a $0.11 loss per share. We are pleased with our progress in controlling operating costs and the improvement in our gross margins, said Keith Maib, chief operating officer. We will continue our efforts to reduce costs and achieve our long-term financial objectives. Maib, in a telephone interview with Reuters, said that while the company does not disclose actual sales figures for dBase for Windows, I’m very confident it is doing well based on initial evaluations from corporate customers and reviewers. Despite talk it could fall prey to or entertain a takeover, Maib said Borland has absolutely no such plans. We’re still certainly in a transition mode here and continue to work very hard to manage our cost structure while investing in growth opportunities, he said. In six months we’ve made a lot of progress and we’re continuing to do that, the turn-around specialist from Price Waterhouse declared.
