Headhunters were out over a year ago to find a chairman for ICL, but nothing came of it, and the need now seems all the more pressing following the elevation of current chairman and managing director Peter Bonfield to additional post of deputy chief executive of parent STC Plc: the appointment is very good news in that it suggests that a fusion between STC and ICL is at last about to be attempted, but Bonfield is rightly a hands-on managing director, and while ICL has to compete in the chairman-to-chairman world dictated by IBM, it needs a chairman in the Tom Hudson-Chris Laidlaw mould to handle the public relations side of marketing.
