BMC Software Inc, which styles itself as an ‘applications’ where most would say ‘systems’ management specialist, is continuing to successfully expand beyond its IMS and DB2 heartland into Unix and NT. Its third quarter for fiscal 1997, ended December 31st, were up 26%, from $119m to $150.1m in the same period last year. Net income was up a healthy 34%, from $35.9m to $48.1m. For the first nine months BMC also saw a 34% increase, from $301m to $403m, in overall revenue. The firm attributes the strong showing to a doubling of sales of its open systems Patrol family, on top of strong mainframe license revenue. The company also saw strong international sales, up 29%, seemingly countering the trend other technology companies are reporting of a soft European market. In other news, BMC has appointed the former CFO for McDonnell Douglas’ aerospace division, William Austin, as its new Chief Financial Officer.
