Systems management outfit BMC Software Inc has introduced version 3.1 of its Patrol application management suite, with what it says is the industry’s first logical application view of a managed environment. The new revision comes with improved speed for problem diagnosis, greater management of information access, and improved customization and deployment of Patrol. BMC claims Patrol 3.1 is the first management suite to provide both physical and logical application views of a managed environment. The company says most other systems use physical views that group together objects and represent them as sets of machines. With Patrol information managers can represent their environment logically by grouping objects together in multiple containers to build customized views. Logical views are meant to enable improved alignment of the managed environment, BMC claims. It means an application can rely on multiple operating systems and databases, or applications can share the same operating systems and databases. Patrol enables a system administrator to drag and drop the objects relating to each application into multiple logical containers. Associated detail can be accessed directly from that logical container. No prices.
