The company released the ProxySG appliance, saying it extends the range of protocols supported compared to previous versions, as well as including on-box support for instant messaging management for the first time.

The device builds on top of Blue Coat’s old proxy caches, adding policy-based content filtering, anti-virus, and IM controls. It essentially allows administrators to control what kinds of protocols and content their users can access.

The ProxySG was previously named by serial number such as SG800, for secure gateway, but has been renamed to help cutting through the clutter of web security appliances, firewalls, and so on director of marketing Frank Cabri said.

In the new release is support for X.509 certificates, the SOCKS protocol, instant messaging protocols, and the URL database provided by SurfControl Plc. The device also supports Websense Inc’s and Secure Computing Corp’s URL databases.
