Blom captures high resolution aerial images of London

The 4cm resolution images are claimed to be most up-to-date datasets

By CBR Staff Writer

Geographical data provider Blom Aerofilms has released 4cm resolution aerial images of central London that can be used for urban planning, engineering and other projects.

According to Blom, its 4cm datasets are the most up-to-date and fully orthorectified images compared to the industry standards of 25cm and 12.5cm images.

David Critchley, managing director of Blom UK, said: “We are really excited about the level of resolution we have managed to achieve. Whilst it is bound to raise a few eyebrows, we guarantee the imagery is 4cm resolution and has not been sub-sampled. In fact, at its Western extent, the proximity to Heathrow forced us to fly so low it is actually 2.5cm resolution.”

Blom provides mapping services by means of aerial photographs. It also offers airborne laser scanning (LiDAR) for establishing terrain and surface models for use in advanced 3D visualisation or analysis. The information is used for the planning and construction of infrastructure, for identification of real property, environmental planning, and more.

Blom began the high resolution London project in 2007, initially focussing on an area of 500 sq km of the city centre. Blom has also acquired high resolution 50cm LiDAR data for the city. The images are expected to provide a real-world view of London for architects, engineers and urban planners to plan their future projects.

The 4cm images are an addition to the existing dataset of oblique and orthographic images of over 120 towns and cities across the UK and 1,000 cities across Europe.
