Block Financial Corp and Columbus Bank & Trust Co have teamed up to bring Internet-based home banking a step closer with the launch of a Webcard Visa. The credit card, created specifically for Internet and World Wide Web users, gives card-holders the ability to access their statements and transaction records over the Internet. Block Financial told American Banker magazine that the pair are working to enhance the service by adding bill payments, a broker service and a link to a combination checking and savings account. However some analysts are dubious about the attraction of the card as it stands. They point out that it is already possible to check card balances over the telephone with a number of banks. Block and Columbus, on the other hand, point out the ease with which the data can be retrieved and pulled into personal finance packages such as Quicken. The analysts’ skepticism also seems to ignore the novelty value of such a card and the fact that some Internet fans will take a real pleasure in being able to check their credit details over the Web and create seamless applications that combine on-line finance with personal computer packages, rather than having to go to the trouble of making a phone call.
