Blackpool’s mobile workers get GIS boost

More productive on the road

By Steve Evans

GGP Systems has announced that StreetScene Officers and Housing Inspectors in Blackpool are using its Geographic Information System (GIS) to improve their productivity and efficiency when working in the field.

Workers are using HTC TYTN II PDAs pre-loaded with the software necessary for them to report incidents or defects, complete inspection reports and issue a range of standard communications in real time and without returning to the office.

The devices are also linked to the Council’s centralised property database, which helps workers to record additional location information, and can connect to GGP NGz, software which manages the National Land and Property Gazetteer (NLPG).

Housing Inspectors use the NLPG to retrieve information about addresses to their handheld devices. They can then use the PDAs to record inspection results and take photographs. This information can then be spatially analysed using a map overlay.

This project follows on from the success of Blackpool’s initial mobile working investment, which was originally designed to support the delivery of services that contribute to the Council’s StreetScene Service Plan.

These services include Assisted Household Waste Collections, Waste Permits, Commercial Waste Services and support for Neighbourhood Environmental Action Teams.
