BlackBerry has launched a series of projects for processing data from connected devices as the firm looks to increase its footprint in the Internet of Things (IoT) market.
Project Ion, powered by BlackBerry’s QNX operating system, is based on a "secure application platform" that would allow users to gather and access their own data from multiple devices and machines.
The Canadian firm, which recorded a $5.87bn loss for fiscal year 2014, is also looking to develop a new ecosystem of partners, wireless carriers and app developers as well as get more involved in the IoT landscape.
"As connectivity costs continue to fall and connected technologies become pervasive, a new market is emerging – the internet of Things," said CEO John Chen in a statement.
"Billions of connections, generating trillions of transactions and exabytes of data daily, will require platforms that can operate securely on a global scale."
The service should be commercially available in February 2014 and companies can sign up for early access to a beta version of the platform via the Project Ion website.
