BlackBerry calls in BBM cavalry to Windows Phone

First step in reinvention to software and services company.

By Ben Sullivan

BlackBerry’s BBM messaging app, also known as BlackBerry messenger, has now been released on the Windows Phone platform.

The move could make both companies more enticing to the enterprise, especially for clients looking for a more secure messaging application.

A BlackBerry spokesperson said on the company’s blog: "After a short run in private beta, I’m happy to announce that BBM for Windows Phone is being publicly released to the Windows Phone store in beta starting today."

BBM still has over 85 million active users, but following Apple and IBM’s enterprise deal last week, the firm still needs to bolster its defenses in the business space.

It was last month when BlackBerry started rolling out BBM Protected, a tweaked version of BBM that can tailor itself to the privacy needs of individual business clients.

BlackBerry has dismissed any threat posed by IBM’s recent move to sell versions of Apple’s iPhone and iPad devices integrated with corporate applications.

The companies claimed that the tie-up won’t impact them or affect plans to re-invent themselves, Reuters reported.

"I do not think that we take the Apple-IBM tie-up terribly seriously," Dell global software business head John Swainson told Reuters.

"I think it just made a good press release."
