BlackBerry announces more lay offs amid restructuring

The company is consolidating its device software, hardware and applications business.

By CBR Staff Writer

BlackBerry is to cut jobs across the world as part of its plans to make its weakening device business profitable again.

The company declined to say how many employees would affected with the move. BlackBerry employed around 7,000 people as of September 2014.

BlackBerry is re-allocating resources to capitalise on growth opportunities and achieve profitability across all of its business units.

The company said in a statement: "As we continue executing our plan for BlackBerry’s turnaround, we remain focused on driving efficiencies across our global workforce.

"As a result, we have made the decision to consolidate our device software, hardware and applications business, impacting a number of employees around the world."

The Canadian mobile company said it plans to ramp up its sales and marketing efforts, targeting partnerships and new appointments.

BlackBerry posted revenues of $660m for Q4, factoring in a $12m negative impact from currency fluctuation. 42% of revenue was realised in hardware, 47% in services and 10% in software.
