At the Seybold conference, half a dozen PostScript clonemakers announced that they were committing to the typeface library offered by Bitstream Inc, Cambridge, Massachusetts, leading Microbytes to suggest that the company may be setting the font standard for clones. Companies in the Bitstream camp ininclude Phoenix Technologies, Control-C Software, Bauer Enterprises, Eicon Technology, Lincoln & Co, and Raster Image Processing Systems: each will supply its own character generator while Bitstream will provide its Fontware Quality Enhancement Module. The individual character generators will be optimised for outline-to-bitmap conversion in specific environments. The Fontware Quality Enhancement Module is a 30Kb pro-gram with hooks that ena-ble it to be integrated into PostScript interpreters. The module controls typographic features such as stem weight, x-height, cap height, side bearings, and baseline alignment and makes appropriate adjustments for each character.
