Electronic information software operation, Bitstream Inc has warned its first quarter results will be below analyst expectations. The Cambridge, Massachusetts company is attributing its poor quarter to a weaker than expected demand in OEM channels and slower than expected growth for the company’s type and technology products in emerging markets. As a result of the slow business, Bitstream will report a $700,000 loss for the quarter. This isn’t the first time Bitstream has showed signs of difficulties. Following the company’s acquisition of Archetype Inc, it reported a loss of $6.3m for the second quarter to June 30 (CI No 3,214), and in the third quarter saw its profits fall 67.0% to $46,000 (CI No 3,278). Bitstream management claims it is confident it will be able to close outstanding OEM deals in the second quarter, but the company has reduced its operating expenses in the Type and Technology division in an attempt to offset the operating loss in the quarter.
