Bitstream Inc, Cambridge, Massachusetts, is fed-up with its name being taken in vain in the UK, and has bought back the re- publishing rights it sold off to Mainstream Software Solutions Ltd in 1992. Mainstream, based in Cheltenham, has been the sole UK reseller of Bitstream’s electronic fonts and font technology since that time, and only has two employees. Bitstream has an equally tiny office in Reading, UK, and the acquisition, for a small amount of cash, will double its total UK staff numbers to four. The company will trade in much the same way it did before. Bitstream was first established back in 1981 by a group of typographic experts who identified the possibilities of desk top publishing and now has around 60 software engineers, type designers and marketing and support staff in the US.
