Chicago-based General Instrument Corp has won a monster $250m order from Primestar Inc to provide the direct broadcast satellite service with its DigiCipher digital compression technology so that Primestar can expand to at least 70 channels by mid-1994 – $250m sounds like an awful lot of decoder chips.
