BIDDING FOR THE SECOND DUTCH CELLULAR FRANCHISE

Dutch state railway and electricity utilities, the three largest Dutch banks, and local cable television operators are all involved in four rival consortia bidding for the Netherlands’ second cellular franchise, which is due to be in operation in 1995: Cable & Wireless Plc and Pacific Telesis Group Inc are involved in the NL-Tel consortium with ABN AMRO Holding NV and regional power companies; Vodafone Group Plc is allied with the ING Bank arm of bank insurer Internationale Nederlanden; Getronics NV is in with Rabobank Nederland; Nederlandse Spoorwegen, the state rail operator, is in with cable firms.
