Betacom Plc, the Enfield, Middlesex-based phone equipment supplier and distributor, has reported pre-tax profits of UKP129,000 for the six months to June 30, against UKP589,000 losses for the same period last year, on turnover down 16% at UKP6m. Sales in Germany, through the company’s joint venture Loewe Betacom, increased over the period, as new products became available. Betacom’s joint venture in the Netherlands, however, has been less advanced, though the company will be launching new products in the second half. Chairman Roger Rowland says prospects in both countries are encouraging – the German company is expected to make a small profit for the year, the Dutch operation next year. To water down the effects of the UK economy on its business, Betacom, like many other firms, is trying to spread itself across the continent.
