The University of California at Berkeley has suspended distribution of its Network Release 2, the code that spawned the BSD/386 operating system that in turn spurred Unix System Laboratories Inc to sue both the university and its spin-off Berkeley Software Design Inc for copyright infringement and misappropriation of trade secrets. Unix Labs claims that the Network Release 2 incorporates AT&T proprietary code. The university gave no reason for the temporary suspension. Its Computer Systems Research Group, creator of both the new release and the Berkeley Software Design company, said resumption of distribution is under administrative review. Keith Bostic of the Computer Systems Research Group indicated that that was all he was able to say, though he hoped Net2 would be re-released.
