BellSouth Corp, Atlanta expects to cut the workforce in its nine-state telecommunications unit by about 8,000 employees by 1996, and plans to merge the headquarters staff of its BellSouth Enterprises business unit with its corporate staff, with appropriate centralised functions transferred to specific business units; no charge is seen this year and the company says it is too early to tell about charges for future years; it has already identified the elimination of some 825 jobs over the next six to 24 months in its comptrollers organization and about 150 involved in economic analysis and forecasting across the nine states; it looks for attrition to make up a substantial number.
