BellSouth Corp will join GTE Corp and Sprint Corp’s Carolina Telephone to launch a $160m high-speed network to transmit voice, data and video images in North Carolina, The Wall Street Journal reports: the three-year project, set to begin in August, will connect users to information from 106 sites in the state; BellSouth will invest $69m, Sprint/Carolina $60m and GTE Corp $30m; the system will use advanced fibre optic transmission gear called synchronous optical network and will consist of five BellSouth Asynchronous Transfer Mode switches and two switches each supplied by Carolina Telephone & Telegraph Co, a Sprint Corp unit, and GTE Corp.
