BellSouth Corp yesterday filed a suit seeking to block AT&T Co’s proposed $12,600m acquisition of McCaw Cellular Communications Inc: in a motion to be filed in US District Court in Washington, BellSouth claimed AT&T’s deal with McCaw violates the consent decree that broke up the Bell system – a clause prohibits AT&T from acquiring stock in a Bell operating company or an entity in which a Bell operating company has an interest of over 50% and McCaw owns minority interests in several cellular properties in which Bell operating companies own majority interests.
