Bell Atlantic Corp’s Bell International unit has now reached agreement with Italian state telecommunications holding company Stet SpA to co-operate in the area of interactive multimedia television in Italy and in some other markets: the two will develop agreements that enable Bell Atlantic to buy 49% of Stream, the Stet subsidiary for interactive multimedia services, and the joint venture will be open to other partners, including Italian companies and others that provide information and programming; an agreement signed between Bell Atlantic and the SIP telephone operating subsidiary of Stet, will result in a video network in Italy – SIP plans to build a video network enabling it to conduct a video-on-demand trial by the end of this year and a market trial in 1995 for up to 2,000 users, which means that whoever finally wins the bidding to supply Bell Atlantic with servers and set-top boxes back home will be well-placed in Italy.
