It looks as if the eventual outcome of the privatisation of the Argentinian national telecommunications network Entel is once more in doubt – Bell Atlantic, which lost its bid to operate the northern half of Entel in October (CI No 1,523) has filed a request to see the documentation of the negotiations with the companies that won the project last month (CI No 1,552). The Wall Street Journal believes that Bell Atlantic is alleging that the contract Argentina awarded to the France Telecom/Stet SpA consortium changed the rate structure to account for Argentina’s inflation making it easier for financing to be lined up. Bell Atlantic lost its bid because Bank Hanover Trust Co could not get its financing together by the deadline. It is possible that the complaint could halt the privatisation of Entel.
