Bell Atlantic Corp claims to have the first commercially available wide-area wireless data network, which can be used from Washington to Baltimore and throughout Pittsburgh: the Cellular Digital Packet Data service, called the Bell Atlantic AirBridge, is intended to enable mobile workers to keep in touch with their offices; Bell Atlantic has alliances with six hardware and software suppliers to market and develop applications for the service, including Software Corp of America Inc, Racotek Inc and Westinghouse Electric Corp’s WSI division; Lotus Development Corp and Advantis Inc are also endorsing the new AirBridge service.
