Belgacom SA, the Belgian state phone company where Ameritech Corp and Singapore Telecom Ltd lead a consortium that includes Tele Danmark A/S and three Belgian companies and holds 49.9%, has signed with Sun Microsystems Inc and Oracle Corp to develop and launch a Network Computer service in Belgium. It’s a memorandum of understanding, the details of which have to be refined but we would like to house and operate the central servers on which companies can put data and applications, Alain Deneef, head of Belgacom’s multimedia division announced in Brussels on Friday. Belgacom said it aimed to make decentralized office servers in all of its 39 area codes accessible by Asynchronous Digital Subscriber Line links, or from anywhere in Belgium via ISDN lines.
