Under the Homeland Security Presidential Directive-12, federal agencies must by October 27, 2006 begin issuing employees and contractors standardized smart cards that are interoperable across other agencies. The GSA has opened a special office to aid agencies in their smart card efforts and get the best prices for agencies with common platforms.
