BEA 6.3 GOES UP AGAINST VIPER ON NT

By CBR Staff Writer

BEA Systems Inc today introduces a native Windows NT version of the Tuxedo OLTP software it sells under license from Novell Inc. In addition it is offering BEA Builder for ActiveX which presents BEA Tuxedo, CICS or IMS services through BEA Connect as ActiveX objects in Windows 95 and NT clients. It enables Windows developers to create Tuxedo applications using Visual Basic, PowerBuilder, Delphi and other desktop tools and comes with a tool for creating application clients. Tuxedo 6.3 for NT is integrated with Microsoft’s native system software services including configuration, management, administration and event logging services where previous Tuxedo-on-NT implementations were lightweight ports. BEA doesn’t expect to compete with the MTS Microsoft Transaction Server or Viper that the company will bundles free of charge with NT, claiming Microsoft’s OLTPware is nor ready for prime time or for use in enterprise systems. A BEA Manager Web Console is a Java-based tool enabling administrators to manage Tuxedo over the web. BEA Tuxedo 6.3 – also available for the 70-odd operating system flavors the company claims to support – costs from $400 per concurrent user. Web Console is $1,000 per management node while BEA Builder for ActiveX will be priced when it ships in July.
