Be Inc doesn’t want to have to take any risks with the launch of its new operating system, and has released a developers copy before the public version in an attempt to gain feedback and avoid error. The Menlo Park company released the developers copy of the BeOS Preview Release at the BE Developer Conference in Santa Clara at the weekend. Former Apple Computer Inc executive Jean-Louis Gassee and president and chief executive officer at Be said: We think it’s important to give our developers a chance to look over our work before it becomes publicly available. However, the company that was shunned by Apple last year following price disagreements over its technology (CI No 3,046) has already signed agreements with Netscape Communications Corp and NeoLogic Systems Inc. Netscape will release Netscape FastTrack Server software, taking its Web server to BeOS, while object technology house NeoLogic will release NeoAccess 5.0, a cross platform object database engine for the new operating system. The company is now billing the BeOS as the first true media operating system, designed to cope with the increasing popularity and importance of electronic media for high performance processors.
