BBN SOFTWARE OFFERS VAX USERS NEW RELEASE OF RS/1 STATISTICS PROGRAM

By CBR Staff Writer

The BBN Software Products Corp arm of Bolt, Beranek & Newman Inc, Cambridge, Massachusetts has a new version, Release 4.0 of its RS/1 VAX/VMS software for manufacturing, engineering and research applications. The new release adds statistical methods and performance improvements, additional graphics and device support, and documented statistical algorithms. The underlying statistical algorithms are claimed to have been completely updated for efficiency and broader statistical applications, with new techniques for handling data, especially non-normal data, and improved facilities for diagnostics and graphical interpretation of results, and specification and refinement of statistical models. There is a new indexed table feature to improve performance for large table look-ups, and on the graphics front, user-defined defaults are now supported, so that users can specify attributes of graphical objects. A new multi-graph feature enables screen layouts containing more than one graphical object to be maintained as a single entity. There is documentation of the statistical algorithms referenced by recognised authorities in the field of statistics, and BBN hopes this will make it easier for users to comply with reporting requirements of regulatory agencies. New device support includes an enhanced PostScript driver; an Rsterm full colour IBM Personal Computer colour graphics terminal emulator so that users can take advantage of MS-DOS graphics while running RS/1 on DEC VAX hardware; the Kermit file transfer protocol for moving files between the micro and the VAX host; and greater support of popular DEC, Hewlett-Packard Co and Tektronix Inc colour printers and terminals.
