BBC strikes deal with Orange

In the latest manifestation of convergence media, the UK's most prestigious TV broadcaster, the BBC, has struck a deal with mobile operator Orange to offer its customers wireless access to a range of BBC television programs on their phone.

Amongst the broadcast content available are some of the BBC’s most popular comedy series’ including ‘The Office’, ‘Little Britain’, and ‘Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps’. Other genres such as the classic ‘Doctor Who’ series are also available.

According to the BBC, as of this month, Orange World users will be able to watch video clips of classic scenes and use famous catchphrases from the shows as ringtones. Images of characters from the shows can also be used as wallpapers for phones.

Jason Blain, director of business development, BBC Worldwide, said, For the first time, we’re giving mobile customers the chance to watch their favorite shows on their phone. More and more, BBC Worldwide is looking to move toward non-traditional broadcasting vehicles, and this partnership with Orange is a testimony to that.
