BBC Director Ashley Highfield outlined the company’s plans in his keynote address delivered with Microsoft’s Bill Gates at a conference in Las Vegas. Mr Highfield said that the BBC had to be technologically innovative in offering audiences platform-neutral, universal access to its content. A vision which he believes will ultimately bring a complete integration of the television and web.

Mr Highfield offered a vision of this when he showed how a future version of the BBC’s current work-in-progress iMP (Integrated Media Player) might be integrated and delivered by the PC desktop, using features and enhancements present in Windows Vista.

iMP, which has just completed a five-month trial, offers downloadable programs on a seven day catch-up basis through the PC.
