BBC to announce enhanced iPlayer

New iPlayer version to make the website more personalised.

By Kate Heslop

Tony Hall, the BBC’s director general, is due to announce the latest iPlayer in a keynote speech on Tuesday, it has been reported.

The next generation iPlayer will allow users to personalise their viewing and listening choices.

In his first speech since April, Lord Hall will discuss the technological challenges facing the BBC, as viewers are using the internet via a number of mobile devices more than ever.

BBC Radio 1 has also announced that it will get its own channel on BBC iPlayer. The radio station hopes that this will attract more young people, with exclusive online performances and interviews that will not be broadcasted anywhere else.

Some of the additional material for the BBC Radio 1 online channel includes music from Radio 1’s Live Lounge and footage from the station’s annual Big Weekend festival.

Lord Hall will also announce the launch of an app for mobile devices that allows users to hear their favourite radio programmes in one place. It will feature programmes from BBC Radio 4, Radio 3 and the World Service. Listeners will be able to personalise their choices and choose what they want to hear, when they want to hear it.
