Bay Networks Inc has vowed to support the private internet for US government agencies and Research Universities, Internet2, by providing $1m worth of networking equipment. Bay plans to participate in the Research and Development of the next generation of internet technologies. The alliance of Internet2 organizations is aiming to develop new high speed IP networks, and develop new Internet protocols, a ubiquitous IP quality of service protocol, and standard Multicast protocols. Bay obviously hopes that as the internet grew up as a university network, the universities are going to be instrumental in the development of the next generation, and Bay’s participation may well give it a jump on its competitors. Bay is committed to IP networking, as its recent $155m acquisition of IP switching specialist Rapid City Communications showed (CI No 3,067).
