Bass Brewers and Bass Inns & Taverns have made a further multi-million investment in Unisys Corp equipment, having appointed the company as the strategic supplier of information technology systems to its Beer Divisions earlier this year. Two top-end 2200/600 mainframe systems running OS1100 have been installed at Bass Brewers’ computer centre at West Bromwich and at the Inns & Taverns’ centre in Warley. The mainframes will support a new suite of applications being developed using Unisys software and Learmonth & Burchett Management Systems Plc’s Systems Engineer and Management Systems computer aided software engineering tools, and the applications will be accessed by 2,800 PW2 workstations running Unisys’ Ofis office automation system. Bass Inns & Taverns division is also installing a point of sale system called the Bass Retail System under which all the managed houses in the division will be equipped with terminals from Checkout Systems Ltd of Houghton Regis, Bedfordshire, and back-office systems based on PW2 personal computers. Bespoke software will link the terminals through the PW2s to the 2200/600 at Warley. Neither company was prepared to reveal the value of the contract, but when Unisys was appointed the division’s strategic supplier, it anticipated business worth UKP30m.
