Barracuda’s appliances already detect and block spyware at the gateway, and the new tool will mean administrators or PC users themselves can remove spyware that was previously undetected, or has found its way into the infrastructure by other means such as through a memory stick or wireless connection.
It’s the next logical step, and one that distinguishes the product in the market right now, said Paul Thackeray the vendor’s MD for EMEA. The spyware removal tool becomes available as a free upgrade with Version 2 of the five model Barracuda Spyware Firewall series.
Mountain View, California-based Barracuda kick-started the year with a $40m first round investment of venture capital and has set out product and commercial expansion plans for 2006.
The business, which claims to have installed 40,000 units of its appliances since it opened its doors three years ago, is looking to extend its footprint into instant message security with a server and gateway-based IM firewall appliance later in the year.
The current headcount of 200 is also likely to increase as new offices in Germany and Japan establish themselves.
The company competes with a range of vendors from appliance suppliers like IronPort and Borderware, to email security services firms like MessageLabs or BlackSpider, and against alternatives such as PC-based software utilities like MailMarshal and Mail Essentials.
