Barnes & Noble Inc says its internet subsidiary, BarnesandNoble.com, will have sales topping $100m in 1998. Barnes & Noble is trying to catch up to Amazon.com, the current leader in the online bookselling race. Sales from the subsidiary were $5.6m during the nine-week holiday period until January 3. Sales for the quarter ending January 1 should be $8m. The online venture has been in operation for less than a year and has yet to be profitable. The company says it expects to turn a profit by 1999.
