Banyan Systems Inc’s Internet division, Coordinate.com, and Santa Barbara, California-based Software.com Inc have announced a joint development and licensing agreement for Banyan’s Street-Talk directory technology. Under the deal, which includes Banyan taking a minority stake in Software.com., Software.com will integrate the directory into its Post Office and InterMail messaging products. The combined products, say the firms, will create a scaleable and robust messaging server that will be available for any client software that adheres to Internet-standard protocols, including POP 3 Post Office Protocol and LDAP Lightweight Directory Access Protocol. Both will sell the enhanced versions of the two products, which are due to ship later this year. The aim is to promote StreetTalk as the directory standard for intranets. Coordinate.com will continue core development for StreetTalk and will partner with other developers for other intranet services such as electronic commerce, firewalls , Web servers, communications and authentication and access servers. Meanwhile, Software.com will focus on enhancing StreetTalk for intranet messaging. The messaging environment produced by the integration work will, they say, thus incorporate directory services, message store and transfer agents.
