According to Ascom, its VoWiFi FreeNET service will minimize the response time to call for its inpatients. The device acts not only as a voice communications device but also integrates with Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute’s (BAKCI) Rauland-Borg Nurse Call System. Through Ascom’s Medamax Gateway, Karmanos’ patient care team receives immediate notification of patient requests and improves staff communication to decrease wait time.

The company said that the handsets are currently in all patient areas with plans to add more handsets when BAKCI completes renovations. The Ascom FreeNET standards-based service consists of market-specific VoWiFi portable handsets with direct SIP connection or optional VoIP Gateway for integration to an existing circuit-switched PBX. The company is also looking at future integrations that would allow caregivers to receive critical value results and alarms.

Karen Goldman, chief nursing officer at Karmanos Cancer Institute, said: “The addition of Ascom VoWiFi technology maximizes our investment and facilitates instant communications between parties involved in patient care.”
