Natural language is the despair of scientists trying to teach computers to think – not surprising since it seems to leave most of our school-leavers baffled these days too: the Daily Telegraph quotes US mathematician John Allen Paulos bemoaning the fact that they have no means of knowing that even though fur coats are made of fur, raincoats are not made of rain even a Macintosh can’t manage that one.
