Backlash forces human rating app Peeple offline

News: Founder Julia Cordray received death threats on social media.

By Nitin Kumar

Peeple, the human-rating app, has had its website along with its Twitter and Facebook page taken offline after it faced huge backlash over its controversial content.

The app which was announced last week, will allow users to rate one another. Users can rate anyone they know and have their mobilel phone number for others to see.

According to the previous format, once a user puts a name in the Peeple system it cannot be removed, unless the user violates the site’s terms of service, and users will not be able to delete bad or biased reviews.

Washington Post termed the app as “Yelp for People”, which created uproar and one of the founders Julia Cordray, received death threats on her social media pages.

The official website for the app is showing “Not Found” for many users. However, some have been redirected to a landing page that says: “Join the positive revolution #oct12”.

In a Linkedin blog Julia wrote: “The question I received the most is “This must be a hoax. You’re not seriously going to create this are you?

“The answer is: It’s real but not in the way it’s currently being portrayed. We are in fact creating an app called Peeple and have every intention of releasing it at the end of November.

“Peeple is a POSITIVE ONLY APP. We want to bring positivity and kindness to the world.”

She also highlighted that the app will have a 100% opt-in system and no one will be showed in the platform without prior permission.

The app will also not have a 48 hour waiting period to remove negative comments and there will be no way to even make negative comments.
