Axis Communications, Inc, the networking equipment manufacturing arm of Swedish group Axis AB, will today launch what it reckons to be the first ever device running on embedded Linux. The Axis 2100 digital network camera makes it possible to transmit live JPEG images across LANs, WANs and the internet at speeds of up to 10 frames per second. The company says any PC on a network can control, access and store digital images via any industry-standard web browser, accessing the camera via its own IP address.

Unlike basic PC-attached cameras, the Axis 2100 connects directly to Ethernet networks, as well as providing an RS-232 serial port for driving a modem or ISDN/GSM terminal adapter where Ethernet ports are unavailable. The chipset at the basis of the new product is AxisÆ own proprietary ThinServer, with all network functionality on the device itself.
